There are few types of food that cause acid reflux. It is important to find out what these foods are in order to to have a better lifestyle.
Coffee, tea and any other caffeine containing drinks
Caffeine containing drinks will cause the relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter (LES), hence increasing the chance of stomach content to reflux back to esophagus.
Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine. Theobromine is a chemical found in coffee, cocoa and tea plants. It produces the same effect as caffeine, hence consuming chocolate will also cause acid reflux.
Fried and Fatty food
Many of us know that fried and fatty food cause obesity, but less people realize consuming fried and fatty food may also cause acid reflux. High fat foods are some of the food that cause acid reflux.
Consuming food that is fried and fat will slow down the process of digestion as it is harder to be digested comparing to fiber food, hence it will increase the period of time that food stays in the stomach. This will increase the pressure of LES and hence allowing food to reflux back to esophagus.
The only exception of fats is omega-3 fatty acids from fish and fish oil as these fats are beneficial to our human body, acting as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent in our body.
Alcohol
Alcohol not only relaxes LES but also increases the amount of acid produce in the stomach.
Tomatoes and tomato based plants
Tomatoes can cause acid reflux because it relaxes LES.
Citrus and fruit juice
Relaxes LES and hence cause acid reflux.
Soda or carbonated drinks
Soda or carbonated drinks normally contain carbonic acid, which is what produces fizz. This drink that contains high amount of acid. The higher concentration of acid, the higher risk of getting this kind of disease.
Peppermint, spearmint and other food containing mint
Food that contains mints can worsen the symptom of acid reflux. It is advised to avoid food containing strong mint, including mint based herbal teas.
The above are food that cause acid reflux. So, if you want to cure your disease, you have to reduce or even stop the consumption of these food.
